MikroTik Course: Why It's Worth Taking

Today, the network technology sphere has become extremely widespread. Therefore, professions related to network and system administration are in great demand. However, it is important to note that each company works with different equipment. Moreover, many companies now require their employees to have universal knowledge in various fields. As a result, it turns out that you need to study both Cisco and MikroTik. At numerous requests from our students, we decided to create our own course for studying MikroTik equipment.

Who is MikroTik training suitable for?

First of all, it should be understood that the world of network technologies is not limited to two manufacturers of equipment. However, most often, companies install either inexpensive MikroTik equipment or prefer higher-quality Cisco routers. Of course, knowledge of Cisco is the most universal and necessary for network engineers. Because if you know how to configure a Cisco router, you can configure any other. In addition, many companies care about the security of their network, fault tolerance and scalability. Cisco equipment can provide all this.

And yet, many enterprises prefer MikroTik equipment. And they have many reasons for this. First of all, MikroTik devices are significantly cheaper, and therefore more accessible. Moreover, you do not need to undergo lengthy training to work with these devices. In addition, MikroTik is a good company that has long established itself on the international market.

How is the training going

To take the MikroTik course, you only need to be a Cisco Academy student on the SEDICOMM University platform. Of course, if you have already taken one of our courses, you understand the value of time. That is why we offer the most compressed course for intensive training. With its help, you can significantly improve your knowledge of MikroTik and start a career in the field of information technology.

Today, there are three programs available for our students:

Why we are launching courses on MikroTik

Everyone understands that Cisco Systems is the leader in the telecommunications and networking devices market. Cisco sets the trends for the development of networking technologies all over the world. It is an entire ecosystem that enables network engineers to quickly and efficiently solve problems of building and operating a network. That is why Cisco equipment is expensive. You always have to pay for multifunctionality, convenience and quality, don't you agree?
But not every organization can afford expensive Cisco equipment. Moreover, not every company needs all the functionality and scale of the network that is possible thanks to Cisco equipment.
The solution that most network engineers come to is to find cheaper equipment for the tasks that management sets for them. MikroTik equipment is quite suitable for this - an inexpensive and relatively high-quality alternative to Cisco.
That is why, and due to numerous requests from our students, we decided to launch an intensive course on MikroTik.

What tasks can be solved after the course?

Command line

Are you afraid of the command line, but understand that it is more convenient to work with it? Learn to work both in the command line and in the graphical interface.

Model selection

Learn how to choose MikroTik equipment according to your requirements: installation in the office or outdoors, whether there will be a VPN or not, whether Wi-Fi is needed, etc.

Stable telephony

You will be able to learn how to set up traffic prioritization so that IP telephony will never “quack” again.

traffic management

Someone is downloading a torrent, while others are sitting without the Internet? You can configure traffic management flexibly, taking into account the number of users and the priority of their tasks.

Firewall

It's easy to protect yourself from attacks - configure your firewall using the "normally open" or "normally closed" schemes.

VPN setup

With it, your traffic will not go, but run? Learn how to set up a VPN in different ways.

Backup Internet

Does your Internet connection drop out regularly? Set up automatic switching from the main channel to the backup channel and back.

Wireless network

Are you completely lost in your Wi-Fi settings? Learn how to set up networks in the 2,4 and 5 GHz ranges. Create guest networks. Set a Wi-Fi network speed limit.

Course program

The course consists of 8 modules, which cover the following material:
You will receive full information about the MikroTik company. We will tell you what the RouterOS operating system is and what components the equipment line consists of. You will also learn everything about the organization of RouterOS and understand what additional features are connected using a package (separate packages): in particular, how to get GPS coordinates from the command line or monitor an APC UPS. We will introduce you to the main features of the COM port and its use and teach you how to restore MikroTik in case of an unexpected failure (the Netinstall utility will help us with this). And, of course, you will learn how to create backup copies of the configuration yourself. In addition, we will consider support for third-party equipment in RouterOS: 3G modems, LTE, SFP modules, etc.
This module will introduce you to the fundamental principles of routing. For example, you will learn what static routing is, what its main features, disadvantages and advantages are. We will also tell you about the comparison with dynamic protocols. Then we will help you understand the statuses (flags) of routes, and you will learn how to interpret them. After this module, you will understand when it is worth using an interface as a gateway and why.
In the third module, we will talk about the bridge, explain what it is for, and where it should be used. Then we will look at how to combine second-level interfaces into a bridge. Additionally, you will learn how to add point-to-point interfaces to a bridge using BCP (bridge control protocol). Among other things, we will tell you why it is necessary to make a software switch, and what its main disadvantages are. In particular, we will see how it is worse than the built-in hardware switch, which is included in most MikroTik SOHO models.
Most of the fourth module is devoted to MikroTik equipment and its capabilities in building wireless Wi-Fi networks. We will present you with a detailed analysis of the 802.11 protocol family, paying special attention to the features of each standard: b/g/n/ac. We will also tell you what operating modes there are for the wireless interface. You will see how easy it is to set up MikroTik as a Wi-Fi access point, a wireless bridge or a wireless Wi-Fi network client. We will clearly show how the protocols developed by MikroTik (Nstreme and NV2) differ from the standard 802.11 protocol. In addition, you will be interested to learn about Nstreme Dual technology. At the end of the lesson, you will be able to independently protect your Wi-Fi network from unauthorized access, and also learn how to limit the bandwidth for wireless clients. Finally, we will look at tools that will be useful when searching for problems and debugging a Wi-Fi network (Frequency usage, Sniffer, Scan, Snooper).
The fifth module offers you to learn in detail about the broadcast interface operating modes (reply-only, enabled, disabled, proxy-arp). You will get acquainted with the settings of the MikroTik DHCP client and DHCP server and will be able to understand how to configure non-standard options of such a server. We will also tell you how to make a DHCP reservation based on the client's MAC address. Then we will move on to the topic of client bandwidth and learn about authentication via Radius. The module will introduce utilities that will help in network monitoring. We will teach you to fully utilize all the capabilities of the SNMP protocol and explain how it can be used to monitor MikroTik operating parameters. You will be interested to know how easy it is to send from a MikroTik router or to make detailed logging of various events. And, of course, you will be able to learn how to interact with the MikroTik technical support team.
In this module, we will tell you what a firewall is built from. You will be surprised how many endless possibilities it has! We will tell you why it is so important to protect your network from unauthorized influence and teach you how to do it correctly. With our explanations, you will learn how to quickly configure a flexible security policy on your router. In addition, we will tell you what SRC and DST NAT are, you will learn to distinguish between src-nat and action masquerade. You will also be interested to learn about such an unusual action as redirect. This module will help you learn how to understand the Packet Flow Diagram (packet movement diagram) inside MikroTik RouterOS. After all, this is the cornerstone that allows you to understand the features of Policy Based Routing, firewall, QoS, NAT, etc.
The seventh module will tell you about the capabilities of RouterOS that allow you to freely manage traffic. In it, we will look at the parameters for configuring simple queues (a special type of queue PCQ from MikroTik and Simple Queue). By the end of the lesson, you will be able to flexibly manipulate the bandwidth for different types of traffic.
The last module will help you learn what types of VPNs (virtual private networks) there are, what their disadvantages and advantages are in comparison with each other. We will teach you how to run SSTP, PPTP, L2TP, PPPoE servers on MikroTik. You will be able to independently manage users of the local database. We will also tell you how to limit the speed of connected clients, and show a scheme for automatically adding a route to a remote network. Additionally, you will study in detail how to add a client to the bridge using BCP.
